Where Are We Really?

Joel Ward, a journeyman hockey player scored the game winning overtime goal that eliminated the defending champion Boston Bruins from the Stanley Cup playoffs. Ward also happens to be of Barbadian descent, a rarity among the predominantly white European players of the NHL. This combination led to a slew of outraged racist tweets on twitter.

Michael Sykes takes a break from his usual hoops writing to discuss the situation:

After reading these tweets, I can honestly say that I was sick to my stomach. I didn’t know how to react. Initially, I was shocked to see such language, such venom, at a man who was just playing a game. Then I was disappointed. I was disappointed in the reactions of those individuals, who weren’t the only ones who tweeted such language, that showed such hatred for a Black man who did nothing more than win a game fair and square.

Fantastic essay.
